Zakat, one of the fundamental pillars of Islam, represents mandatory charitable giving. All eligible Muslims are required to contribute at least 2.5% of their accumulated wealth to support the impoverished, destitute, and others classified as mustahik. This practice stands as one of the most significant forms of wealth redistribution, aiming to provide substantial aid to those in need
نَّمَا الصَّدَقَاتُ لِلْفُقَرَاءِ وَالْمَسَاكِينِ وَالْعَامِلِينَ عَلَيْهَا وَالْمُؤَلَّفَةِ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَفِي الرِّقَابِ وَالْغَارِمِينَ وَفِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَابْنِ السَّبِيلِ فَرِيضَةً مِنَ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ
The eight (8) categories of eligible Zakat recipients are:
  • The poor (al-fuqarâ’)
  • The needy (al-masâkîn)
  • Zakat-workers
  • Those whose hearts are to be reconciled (mu’allafât al-qulûb)
  • To free those in bondage (slaves and captives)
  • The debt-ridden, for those who obtained debt for legitimate purposes.
  • In the cause of God
  • The wayfarer (the stranded, or one traveling who lacks resources)
